I-70 Twin Tunnels CM/GC

Overview

The I-70 Twin Tunnels project involved the excavation of the eastbound and westbound tunnels along I-70 to add a lane to the eastbound direction and provide future capacity and mobility improvements for the westbound direction. To minimize the impact of the project on traffic along the I-70 Mountain Corridor, CDOT developed an aggressive timeline to complete the work, between the months of April-December for a highway detour to be implemented. During this period, the tunnel was completed, three miles of highway widened, a new bridge added, and approximately 4,500 LF of cast-in-place concrete walls to support the future lane, all in the first year of the construction. The following year, we successfully constructed the westbound tunnel and performed a significant surface rock blasting campaign to the immediate east and west of the tunnels. This project was the recipient of a CCA/CDOT CMGC Project Management award and the CCA Environmental Excellence award.
