Powers Boulevard (CO 21) and Research Parkway Interchange

Overview

The intersection at Powers and Research in Colorado Springs, CO., was originally an at-grade signaled intersection with excessive traffic wait times and vehicle congestion, a lack of pedestrian and bicycle access, and limited multimodal movements. Kraemer replaced the at-grade intersection with an innovative Diverging Diamond Interchange by constructing an overpass for Powers Blvd. traffic to move continuously through the intersection over Research Pkwy. This design resulted in improved peak hour levels of service at ramp intersections, reduced traffic delays at ramps, and improved safety while providing additional sidewalks for pedestrians and bicyclists.
