USAC Traveling Mooring Bitt System

Overview

Kraemer was prime contractor for a new traveling mooring bitt system and rehabilitation of the upper guide walls at Locks and Dams 4, 5, 5A, 7, 8, and 9 on the upper Mississippi River in Minnesota and Wisconsin. Completed in 2022, the project included removal of the entire existing traveling mooring bitt system, rehabilitation of the upper guide wall, fabrication, testing, and installation of a new traveling mooring bitt system. All construction had occurred during the winter months once the river was closed to navigation. The purpose of the tow rail system, which includes the traveling mooring bitts, is to assist and speed up the upstream travel of 1,200-foot tows through 600-foot lock champers.
